Volunteer Lake Atitlan
Scholarshoip & Tutoring Program
WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY PROJECT
You Can Help Provide Scholarships For Children
Without Opportunities
Thank you for choosing San Pedro La Laguna as part of your vacation. We at Orbita Spanish School in Guatemala recognize in order to have a more balanced world it is important to invest in education. Unfortunately, many children in our community do not have the opportunity to study due to the lack of financial resources. For that reason, Orbita Spanish School has created a volunteer Lake Atitlan scholarship and tutoring program so these children do not fall behind and can excel in their studies.
With this Scholarship Program, we are giving an opportunity for those children who have the determination and dedication to their studies but lack the resources to go to school. Our Scholarship Program supports students with $19 a month to pay for their school fees. Our purpose is to avoid those children quitting school or taking a wrong path due to financial reasons.
These families live in extreme poverty. Income of these families range from Q25 to Q50 quetzales per day ($ 3.50 – $ 6.50 USD). Miraculously they survive, however their lives are full of great difficulties.
In addition, children who receive a monthly scholarship also return something back to the community by contributing to the following activities:
1. The last Saturday of each month, the scholars along with the Spanish students and teachers at Orbita collect garbage both outside and inside Lake Atitlan.
2. Each month children receive training on different topics of wide interest. For example, consumerism, care of the environment, health prevention, mental health, etc.
What Better Way to Know Our Community Than by Participating In Our Scholarship and Tutoring Program?
Here are some sample projects or ideas you might want to consider during your time at Orbita:
- Assist in homework: Help with art projects, crafts and academics. Or ensure that they do their task well.
- Tutor Mathematics, Geography or other subjects: Many students have school challenges especially with math, so your help will be greatly appreciated.
- Teach English: All our scholarship recipients are interested in learning English. If you are an English speaker, you are a valuable resource in San Pedro La Laguna in helping children learn English. Nowadays, English is required for most professional jobs.
Another purpose of our Tutoring Program, is for our students who are learning Spanish to interact with the local people, to learn more about the culture in Guatemala and to have the opportunity to practice their Spanish.
The English classes take place in the local students´ home and those students who have no place to study may come to Orbita´s campus to take their classes.
